Tales from May Brimfield
I still can't believe I found this...
I go to Brimfield with only a few steadfast expectations: long days, dirty shoes, and treasures to take home of both the physical and spiritual variety.
Otherwise, I let the fields guide me. I always have a few things that I’m hoping to come across, but I’ve found my most inspired treasure hunting isn’t done under the restrictions of a checklist. Actual purchases aside, there are certain quirks of the fields I’ve come to expect, as evidenced by the Bingo card I made below:
One thing I’m never really expecting to find much of on the muddy fields of Brimfield? Rare designer vintage. And definitely not rare design runway pieces. While I typically spot the occasional 60’s Pucci dress or well-worn Burberry trench coat, I never really see the kind of European luxury that’s been dominating the NYC vintage scene for the past few years. There’s a hot debate in the comments section of the girl who thinks she found a 1950’s Hermès bag for $50 last week, but the jury is still out on authenticity!
Of course we were all still out the fields ourselves before the “$50 Hermès at Brimfield” story broke, so imagine my surprise when I found a very real (and very sickening) piece from one of the most popular names in designer vintage right now…
