I’m a little over a month in to what may be the most ambitious project I’ve taken on in a while. I decided to track my clothing habits this year for many reasons, but most of all to have a better understanding of my wardrobe from a sheer numerical standpoint. My hope is that tracking everything I wear will help me illuminate the differences between how I want to dress and how I actually dress. Are my favorite pieces getting as much wear as they deserve? Are the items I’m most reliant on an accurate reflection of my tastes? How much clothing do I even have? More importantly, how much of it am I really wearing?

January, for most of us (all of us?), is not a particularly exciting time for getting dressed. The psychic warmth of the holiday season has passed, leaving us with early sunsets and icy winds minus any festive anticipation. January feels like a month to just get through. While it makes sense to start a project like this from a calendar perspective, it’s definitely not a fun or inspiring time in terms of my outfits. I tried not to let my tracking effect how I got dressed, in order to produce the most “organic” results. I repeated looks multiple times, took an impromptu weekend trip to somewhere very very cold, and balanced a sickening amount of doom scrolling by reading four books. Off to an okay start, I suppose!
