From my extensive personal collection, all from the brands included in this letter and purchased for under $100 each!

Not to brag, but I have an excellent collection of vintage coats.

My vintage coats get me stopped on the street. Chic women at the grocery store ask me, “where did you get your coat?” I have sweeping trench coats, I have wool coats with sumptuous fur trim, I have leather coats softened and faded by owners past. I’m obsessed with my vintage coats, and I think you should be obsessed with yours too.

There’s finally a semblance of a chill in the air here in New York, and the doors of my coat closet are open. As I began to reacquaint myself with my cold weather co-stars, I realized that some of the labels most familiar to me are brands many people have never heard of. Under-the-radar brands means under-the-radar prices, as long as you know what to look for.

If you’ve hung out with me at any point in the last five years, there’s a good chance I was wearing this trench coat

Below, five of my favorite vintage brands for coats and jackets. Most of these companies made a wide variety of offerings, but I’ve narrowed down the specific styles that I think each company did best. I’ve included links under each brand for a range of pieces, all under $200 (most under $100!) in sizes S to 5X.

All of the items in this piece are being shared through the Ebay Ambassador program. I am eligible for a small commission on anything purchased through the links included here.

A quick note before we dive in! All of the brands below have made pieces that I’ve personally sourced, sold, and worn. If I were selling these coats to you directly through my vintage brand, most would be double (or triple) the price. These coats are at a level of quality that I believe warrants those prices, especially factoring in my labor. The vintage I sell is processed and ready to wear, which includes everything from leather conditioning to dry cleaning to hand sewing to replaced zippers. When you shop with me in store or at an event, I have also paid overhead (rent, booth fees, transportation) to bring the piece to you to touch and try on in a special setting.

The pieces linked below are generally unprocessed, meaning you pay less, but with the understanding that any necessary restoration is now on you. I don’t think either shopping experience is better or worse, just different, but I do feel as though it’s important to make the distinction. Value goes beyond just price.

As always with online resale, I highly recommend saving items to your watchlist and letting them sit in your cart before buying. I received offers for generous discounts on at least half of the pieces in this list within 24 hours just for looking, and you’re likely to be offered the same. Happy hunting!

Gallery

On your mood board: hard-boiled aesthetics, feminine menswear, a strong shoulder, your friend’s hot divorced mom circa 1988.

The coats: dramatic hemlines, oversized lapels, shiny rain-repellent fabrics that pick up the wind just right when you walk.

First two images are of my own Gallery trench coats, second two coats are included in the links below

Dark grey classic trench coat, Size 14, $29

1980’s cream trench coat, Size 10, $39

Not a trench, but couldn’t resist including two more great coats. This leather is an enchanting shade of brown, and I love a zip-out liner - Size L, $60. This plush faux fur is so sweet and whimsical, a classic black faux fur with a twist - Size 12, $64.35

Marvin Richards

On your moodboard: the women of The Sopranos, 2000’s-does-70’s, paparazzi photos after the release of Almost Famous (2001).

The Coats: slick leather, statement making fur trim, warmth without sacrificing an ounce of style.

Last photo is me in a Marvin Richards coat I won at auction. I bought it to sell, but as soon as I pulled it out of the box I knew I was in trouble...
